ICT can give state economy a boost

KUCHING: Information communication technology (ICT) should be innovated in ways that can satisfy the needs of people in current and future generations who will one day lead the nation.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said this technology had become the centre of their lives so much that they were becoming more connected to the world compared to a few decades ago.
“Multi-touch tablets, smart phones, Internet, augmented visual world, video games, e-mails, instant messaging and countless more are some ways they are getting in touch with their creative and innovative side, and at the same time connected to the world at large,” he said at the Conference on Information Techno–logy in Asia (Cita) here yesterday.
His text of speech was read by Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh.
Taib said the direct and indirect impact of technology change must not be ignored due to this trend.
“Instead of being passive in the sideline, we must prepare ourselves by engaging in the change to shape the future of the nation.
“In order to be an internationally competitive nation, we must not only become an active technology user but we should also gear ourselves to be one of the leading technology producers.”
He said focus should not only be on competing for better and more advanced technology but rather on the efforts on the people’s needs.
With globalisation and economic slowdown, there was an essential need to turn to information technology and communication industry to spur the economy, he said.
Taib said the country and the state were still short of skilled information technology and engineering professionals.
“Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will thus play an important role in the state human resource development activities.
“I am confident that the country’s economy, specifically Sarawak’s, would progress as we are grooming and producing more knowledge workers needed to lead the people.
“This would assist very much in the Sarawak Corridor for Renewable Energy where it targets to create 1.6 million jobs with 10 social and commercial sectors to be opened for the people’s benefit,” he added.
